I'm a fan of the old Kurosawa films. 'Seven Samurai' of course, but things like 'Rashomon' as well. Makes me want to improve my avatar to be like Takeda Shingen Smile

Rashomon?! Here you are Sir, the trailer!

I ordered Ran and Kagemusa along with Zatoichi from Play Asia to go with my copy of Shogun 2. My ordered version of Kurosawa's Kagemusha turned out to be out of stock and now I have almost US$18.00 stored in my store credit. The other Kagemusha costs about US$20.00 but I always pay by transfer so the transfer fee would not make it worth my while. I'll be buying the Kagemusha alright but not now Rolling Eyes

Got Ten to Chi to, haven't seen it yet tho.

The Hidden Blade was pretty mediocre, much of the story has been taken from Twilight Samurai, it just doesn't have as good cast.

Zatoichi is a great film. Not many others out there that I know of that are comical and violent at the same time, most of what I've seen seem quite heavy on the drama.

I liked Zatoichi, just saw it few days back. Only thing that caught my eye were the pretty poor quality special effects they had. Other than that, liked it a lot. Cool

That's the charm of it, I watched it and felt I was playing an old PS2 game like Onimusha Warlords with the cg blood effects. It proves you don't need million dollar budgets to make an amazing martial arts movie.

Indeed. You certainly don't need fancy effects to make a good movie. Whether the movie is able to engage its audience has more to do with its story line, acting and whether its audience able to relate to the characters in the movie in my opinion.

I like it too. It doesn't come across as a cheap movie to me. Not exceedingly great but it has its own 'class' and flavor I must say.

*cough*

Not a bad suggestion then, eh? Razz

Saw it ages ago, don't know which one (there's a lot iirc, and a series), barely remember it except for that I really liked it. Smile

Yea well you picked the best out of them already, Akira Kurosawa films are great.. one of the best japanese cinema directors of all time.
But you forgot Yojimbo Smile

It's funny to see how many of the spagetti westerns are based on these old sumarai films, like a fistfull of dollars and for a few dollars more.

I'm getting Kagemusha from Akira Kurosawa soon.

Those old Japanese flick don't let it fool you I tried buying Seven samurai and such and was deterred by the price tag 70 bucks. Other old titles have similar price tag too. Japanese price tag is just INSANE.

Yea those movies are really hard to come by. legally... ahum.. Embarassed respect to you. I tried to buy a whole box of all his movies one time on Ebay but the price went like 30 zillion times past my budget.

Umm Even Kurosawa's Ran and Kagemusha would cost 45 bucks. But if you get the Hongkong version instead the Japanese version the price gets reduced to 10-12 bucks or in the case of Kagemusha 20. I bought Hong Kong version of Ran and you could have Japanese voice too and English subtitle. No reason at all with buying the insanely priced Japanese versions which probably just have a different or slightly different cover.
